Small update & tentative Linux version

New small update with version 0.4.12:

  • Added voice clip previewing! In the Customization menu, you can now select any voice pack and get a list of all voices, showing their file name, loaded image, and the option to play it back. The free version has also been updated to include this feature.
  • Tweaked the scoring algorithm yet again. The Settings menu now has an option for "Easier scoring from judges," which is on by default. The main difference is that the comparison between the max waveforms is now weighted greater versus the comparison between the average waveforms. This should help with quieter voice clips as well as audio matching in general.
  • Added a check to prevent crashing when the game tries loading a broken image.
  • Fixed a bug where the microphone input stays on when using the live mic in the Settings mic test.
  • Fixed the audio effect checkboxes in the mic test so that toggling them actually makes the changes apply.
  • Released a possible Linux version of the full game. The only Linux device I currently own is an old laptop I literally pulled from a dumpster, so I cannot personally confirm that this Linux version works the same as the Windows version. As such, please do not purchase The Choicer Voicer at this time unless you also own a Windows device that can play it.

I love this, please lean even harder into making it feel like a wii game, it's great

I'd love to see some extra sprite options for characters, like player_sad player_happy ect, or the option to use something animated for a character, I think godot has webm for that? I just need the breakdancing cat as a judge

An overhaul to the player pack structure is in the works to allow for different expressions, I actually posted about that on my dev twitter recently: https://x.com/YeahMaybeDev/status/1813055565133705537

As for animation, I would've done so already if it had support, but unfortunately the Godot Engine has no native support for animated image formats, so if I do manage something, it will have to be a work-around.

Cool. Would it be possible to also get the ability to edit / add subtitles to the voice lines in the edit menu?

The next big version (ver 0.5) will include a lot of QoL options with most customization being accessible in-game. Version 0.4 is clunky and rudimentary, but I knew that when I released it. Early access and all that, but I wanted 0.4 out for people now rather than wait until I finish 0.5.

It's possible I backport that option to 0.4 if I can find a sloppy quick fix for it, but I wouldn't count on it.

There is no need to do a quick and dirty thing just for such a small request. I'd happily wait for 0.5 instead.
But I wanted to take a break from pack making anyway now, as I've basically been doing nothing but assemble the valve pack for the past couple days to get it out.
